Rovanjska

Beautiful Rovanjska is situated in the bay at the very end of Velebit sub-mountains channel, near the town of Zadar. Vicinity of Velebit enriches this area with its parks, caves, walking trails and bicycle paths. Modrič cave is a speleological treasure at the foot of Velebit mountain and the church of St. George in the centre of Rovanjska is the pearl of old Croatian sacral architecture.

Here you will experience one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. At the end, only as a curiosity, it should be mentioned that Rovanjska, according to the old written sources was called Ravanjska. Most probably because this little place, which is a kind of hamlet of the Jasenice, was formally named and written as “in Rawna”.

Modrič

Modrič is located only 2 km west of Rovanjska. It is the most western part of our Municipality and starting point for the mountaineers when they are up to climb Sveto brdo (Holly hill), second highest peak of Velebit Mountain with 1.752 metres.

It is situated on the south-eastern range of the mountain and belongs to the mountaintops of the Southern Velebit. It is also where the highest peak of Velebit – Vaganski vrh is situated. In Modrič there is a lake which has never been explored to the end. Its depth is still unknown. It is specific for its dark blue colour (=modro), according to which, it’s assumed, Modrič got its name.

Zaton Obrovački

Zaton Obrovački belongs both to Jasenice Municipality and Zadar County, situated 1 kilometre north-west from Obrovac. In more recent times Zaton Obrovački became renowned for two celebrated Croatian national team soccer players. Both Dado Pršo and Luka Modrić families originate from this little village.

Jasenice

Jasenice is located in the southern part of the Velebit sub-mountains. Today, they consist of a couple of separate hamlets originating from old ones belonging to Jasenice – Modrič, Rovanjska, Maslenica and Jasenice. The Jasenice area stretches from Modrič hamlet in the west to the former “Glinica” factory above Obrovac town in the east and in the north from the peaks of Velebit and mountain pass Mali Alan to the Novigrad Sea in the south.

Jasenice is a type of scattered village, consisting of a series of hamlets, whose residents were mainly occupied with livestock farming in the past. Jasenice passes one of the most famous sections of the A1 highway from St Rok tunnel to Rovanjska and the gorge of Novigrad Sea, bridged by two bridges: The “new” one in Rovanjska and the “old” one in Maslenica. Jasenice abounds with natural beauties, such as Velebit landscapes (Mali Alan, Tulove grede, Podprag, Gornja and Donja bukva, Libinje, Kraljičina vrata) and above Jasenice dominates the second highest mountain peak of Velebit – Sveto brdo (Holly hill) peaking at 1.753 m. The Canyon of Zrmanja River from Obrovac to the estuary in the Novigrad Sea cuts the south-eastern border of Jasenice towards neighbouring Kruševo. On the way out of Rovanjska, on Matekova punta there is one of the most famous Croatian caves – Modrič špilja, explored to the length of 829 metres.
